Born in Manresa, Spain. In 1988, he graduated in Theoretical Physics from the Complutense University, Madrid (Spain), and gained his PhD in 1991. Between 1991 and 1996, he was Associate Professor at the University of Castilla-La Mancha (Spain) and Research Associate at the University of Colorado, Boulder (USA). From 1996 until 2001 he was Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Innsbruck (Austria). Since 2001 he is a member of the Max Planck Society and Director at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Garching (Germany). In 2002 he also became honorary professor at the Technical University of Munich. He carries out research in quantum computing, quantum optics and many-body physics. He is a member of the Spanish, German (Leopoldina) and Bavarian Academies of Sciences, and corresponding member of the Austrian. He holds seven honorary doctorships.

Previously Murray led a team engaged in customer projects related to algorithms, applications, and performance testing. Since joining the company in 2002 Murray has been involved in all aspects of systems engineering and processor development for D-Wave’s quantum computers. Some of these project areas include cryogenic refrigeration systems, superconducting electrical filters, cryogenic chip packaging, magnetic screening and shielding, QPU signals, and automated test systems.

hat 1999 am MPI für Festkörperforschung in Stuttgart mit einer theoretischen Arbeit zu inelastischer Lichtstreuung an Hochtemperatursupraleitern promoviert. Danach ging er direkt in die Bosch-Forschung, wo er zunächst für mehr als 10 Jahre auf dem Gebiet des Software-Engineering forschte und als System- und Software-Architekt arbeitete. Im Jahr 2013 begann er, Quantenkryptographie und später Quantencomputing zu scouten. Momentan koordiniert Thomas die Quantentechnologie-Aktivitäten bei Bosch. Er ist außerdem das zweite deutsche Mitglied des europäischen Quantum Community Network (QCN) und Mitarbeiter des Flagship Coordination Office (FCO). Thomas ist sehr aktiv bei der Gründung des European Quantum Industry Consortium (QuIC) und Projektmitarbeiter im europäischen QRANGE-Projekt, wo er Beiträge zur quantentheoretischen Modellierung von Zufallszahlengeneratoren leistet.
